Frequently Asked Questions
Why only five continents, not six or seven?
This site's data groups every country by a `region` field with exactly five inhabited values -- Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania -- following the same regional grouping the source dataset uses. Antarctica appears only as the region for a few uninhabited or minimally-inhabited territories (Antarctica itself, Bouvet Island, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, and South Georgia), none of which is a UN member state, so it isn't offered as a sixth drawable option here.
Why does "Americas" combine North and South America?
That's how the underlying dataset's region field is structured -- one "Americas" region rather than separate "North America" and "South America" regions. It's a real and common way to group the Western Hemisphere (the UN's own geoscheme does the same at the top level), just not the only convention; a source with a different regional scheme would draw this line differently.
Is every continent equally likely to be drawn?
Yes -- this page draws uniformly across the five continents themselves (each has the same 1-in-5 chance), not weighted by how many countries each one contains. If you'd rather have the draw reflect country counts (so populous continents like Africa are proportionally more likely), use the main generator's "All continents" setting instead, which draws directly from the full country pool.
What happens when I follow the link to a continent?
It takes you to that continent's own page, which preloads the same continent filter into the main generator -- so you land straight on a country draw scoped to only that continent's UN member states (with the option to add territories there too), rather than having to set the filter yourself.
